Whenever we think or discuss traditional Japanese sword the first thing that comes in our mind is samurai katana. Most people think katana and Japanese swords are a synonym for one another. But the single-edged curved sword is not the only sword originated and used in the island country. There are other swords as well that are equally capable of winning the battle in one move. One of such sword is Nagamaki. The Nagamaki sword The word Nagamaki means’ ‘a long wrap’, and it is a key characteristic of any Japanese sword. The Japanese swords are long and sleek. Like katana Nagamaki sword also has single edged, curved blade and it was quite long. On an average, a Nagamaki sword is 2 feet long. Altogether Nagamaki sword is similar to katana but the thing that made this sword unique was its handle. The Nagamaki sword has long handled in comparison to katana and sometimes the length of the handle used to be equal with the blade. The uniqueness of handle was just not its length but there was much more. The shaft of the sword that the attached blade with handle was just not an ordinary wooden sword rather with a certain difference. Unlike katana where the shaft and handle were wrapped in multiple layers of silk and leather; Nagamaki has little or no wrapping of the handle at all. This feature of Nagamaki is similar to Tachi sword. Usually, the Japanese swordsmiths have standards of making katana swords but they made Nagamaki in varied form and the size of the blade, handle varied as per their choice. The katana and Nagamaki both were two-handed swords but Nagamaki was more effective for slicing and sweeping style. The long handle gave balance to the fighter, making the movements more precise and accurate. Both Nagamaki and katana have their legacy and were sued by samurai warriors when they ruled the heart of Japan.
